Dr Sue Boyd - Australian Diplomat and Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.

AIIA Victoria is delighted to host Dr Sue Boyd. Dr Boyd has 33 years of experience in diplomacy, serving as Australia’s High Commissioner in Bangladesh and Fiji, Ambassador in Vietnam, and Consul General in Hong Kong. Her memoir, 'Not Always Diplomatic' encompasses her family’s experiences, from her father serving in the British Army in British Raj, attending thirteen schools in 5 countries, to beginning her career in the diplomatic service. Boyd recounts her experiences as a woman in international relations, overcoming barriers and challenges throughout her many postings, including to Portugal, East Germany, the United Nations in New York. She shares her personal stories as a diplomat, living in a foreign country, and managing an embassy as well as providing a personal description of the Speight coup of May 2000. Sue will discuss her new book and her reflections on her career in the Australian Foreign Service involving the Portuguese Carnation Revolution, the Stasi in East Germany, managing public affairs of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Dr Sue Boyd has served in a number of Australian diplomatic positions, having joined DFAT in 1970, serving in Portugal, East Germany and at the UN in New York. She was High Commissioner in Bangladesh and Fiji, Ambassador in Vietnam and Consul General in Hong Kong. Since returning to Western Australia after her retirement in 2003, she became the President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs in WA for eight years and was subsequently made a fellow of the AIIA for her contribution to Australia’s international relations. 

 

This event will be streamed online via Zoom. Registrations close on 8 September at 2pm, after which you will receive a follow-up email containing details of how to join the Zoom webinar. The event will commence at 6pm AEST (Melbourne time, UTC+10)
